The Flex I/O modules are manufactured by Allen-Bradley as a series of input and output modules. Different Flex I/O modules come with different numbers and combinations of inputs and outputs that are suitable for different kinds of industrial applications. The components of the Flex I/O modules include an adapter with a network connector and two 24 Volts DC field power connectors, a terminal base with a keyswitch and terminal strips, and an I/O module with all of the input and output points. The adapter and the terminal base both also have FlexBus connectors. The Flex I/O modules are designed to do everything that larger scale rack-based I/O systems can do without needing the same large installation space requirements that rack-based I/O systems require.
With the Allen-Bradley Flex I/O modules, the users can independently select the network, the termination style, and the I/O setup that best suits their applications. The networks that the Flex I/O modules support include the Devicenet, the Controlnet, and the Ethernet/IP networks. Because the Flex I/O modules have 2 field power connectors, it is possible to use a daisy chain setup for the power connections with the modules and adjacent terminal bases. The keyswitch on the modules prevents the users from installing the wrong module on the wrong preconfigured terminal base. Additionally, the terminal bases of the Flex I/O modules are the parts of the modules where most of the wiring terminations in the system are made, and the types of terminations that they support include the cage-clamp, spring-clamp, and the screw-clamp terminations.
