The Allen-Bradley/Rockwell Automation FLEX Ex I/O modules are industrial input and output modules that are available with different numbers of inputs and outputs and different ratios of inputs to outputs that are suitable for different applications. The FLEX Ex I/O modules can be used in hazardous industrial environments to make safe connections to field devices. These modules are each made up of the I/O module that contains all of the I/O points, the terminal base where most of the wires and connections in the system are terminated, and the adapter which has ports for making connections with 24 Volts DC rated power sources. The terminal base and adapter also come with bus connectors and the terminal base has a keyswitch to make sure that only the proper compatible devices can be connected to it.

The Allen-Bradley/Rockwell Automation FLEX Ex I/O modules are designed to be similar to the standard Allen-Bradley FLEX I/O modules and to provide the same appearance, the same feel, and the same ease of use as the FLEX I/O modules, but they are additionally designed to operate safely in hazardous areas and to provide all the advantages of the standard modules in areas where the standard modules cannot be used. Additionally, the FLEX Ex I/O modules allow applications that are handled by ordinary FLEX I/O modules in non-hazardous environments to be transferred seamlessly to FLEX Ex I/O modules in hazardous environments. One FLEX Ex I/O module adapter can connect to 128 digital I/O, 64 analog inputs, or to a mix of these analog and digital I/O that best suits the users’ needs.
