The Block I/O series from Allen-Bradley is a series of remote I/O devices that are designed to be small and self-contained. The Block I/O devices contain power supplies, programmable controller interfaces, I/O points, and signal conditioning circuitry. The 2 basic available Block I/O device types include a model that has 8 inputs and 8 outputs and another module that has 10 inputs and 6 outputs, and except for the different ratios of inputs to outputs, these devices are identical. Some of the devices that the Block I/O modules are compatible with include the PLC-2, the PLC-3, and the PLC-5 programmable controllers as well as the SLC 500 control modules.
The Allen-Bradley Block I/O modules each come with a DH-485 port, a power LED, a communication LED, status indicator LEDs for each of the input and output points, switch assemblies, a removable I/O connector, and a removable remote I/O link connector. The switch assemblies are 2 DIP switches that are used to set the I/O rack number, the DH-485 terminator, the transmission rated, the starting I/O group, the last chassis, and the last state. The DH-485 port on the Block I/O modules is meant for use with the DH-485 data link that is used by an SLC controller. The Block I/O modules are designed to function as complete I/O interfaces that provides all the features and functions of I/O modules, I/O racks, adapters, and power supplies in a single streamlined device.
