The 8520-KBI is an integral component within Allen-Bradley's 9/Series CNC machining systems, serving as a keyboard I/O ring interface with a pivotal role in facilitating seamless communication between operators and CNC control devices. Designed for both monochrome and colored operator panels, this module features a fiber optic interface with distinct red and black ports for output and input, respectively, enabling data exchange through the I/O ring. To ensure proper integration, a unique node address must be assigned to this module. Installation requires the disconnection of power to the control circuit, followed by the removal of cable connections from the operator power supply and the flat cable linking the operator keyboard to the I/O ring interface. The fiber connectors attached to the IN and OUT ports must also be detached. Subsequently, mounting screws on the module's corners can be removed to facilitate the installation of a replacement keyboard I/O ring interface, aligning with the mounting screw holes. Prior to reconnecting I/O connections, the node address should be configured by matching the previous JP1 and JP2 settings of the old module. Additionally, the JP3 jumper must be appropriately set, shorting the center pin and COP pin for a color operator panel or the center pin and MOP pin for a monochrome operator panel. This interface functions as a conduit for data transfer, receiving inputs from a 51 alphanumeric soft keys keyboard and transmitting them to the CNC control devices. It collaborates with the MTB panel (switches and push buttons) and RPGs, enabling operators to effectively interface with the CNC motherboard and CPU. Powered by 5 Volts of DC from the operator panel power supply, the 8520-KBI is equipped with a fault indicator, a red LED, which activates in the event of ring communication errors. While discontinued since April 17, 2014, with no replacement product available, the 8520-KBI remains an essential link in the CNC 9/Series systems, offering operators precise control and monitoring capabilities while disregarding other keyboard connections on the communication ring if necessary.
