The 1747-KFC15 by Allen-Bradley is an SLC 500 ControlNet RS-232 Interface Module. It facilitates communication between the SLC 500 modular processor and the ControlNet network using the RS-232 serial port. The module has two ports that allow connection to devices; the RS-232C serial port and the network access port. The RS-232C port allows full or half-duplex communication with a serial port on the connected SLC 500 processor, while the network access port allows a ControlNet programming terminal or device to connect to the module without interfering with the cable wiring. The port numbers range from 1 to 14, however, the 1747-KFC15 uses Port 2 for ControlNet and Port 3 for DF1 communication. It is capable of sending embedded responses, which are DF1 ACK or NAK embedded within another DF1 message. It also has message reply time-out that aids memory buffer management with a default value of 32 seconds.
The 1747-KFC15 module is equipped with status LEDs which show the module’s communication activities as well as the operating conditions. It is configured using the module’s rotary and DIP switches. This configuration should be done when the module is powered off. When users purchase this module, they should ensure that they receive the RS-232 cable as well as the user manual with it. The 1747-KFC15 module is CSA Hazardous Location certified, CE compliant, and UL-listed. It is however, susceptible to damage from electrostatic discharge which can impair the internal semiconductor devices. The 1747-KFC15 weighs 0.4 pounds and can function at a temperature range of 32 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit.
