The Allen-Bradley 1746-NI8 is an SLC 500 Analog Input Module. This single-slot input module is suited for time-sensitive applications which require accurate and rapid analog signal conversion. The 1746-NI8 is a high-resolution analog input module with high-density components. It has 8 high-impedance input channels which can be wired as single-ended or differential inputs. The input module receives analog data and converts it to digital data which is then stored in the module’s image table. This process allows all modular and fixed SLC 500 processors to access the data.
Up to 8 connections to analog or voltage sensors in any combination can be made. Conversion to digital operation can be done using the switched capacitor and successive approximation. The configuration process for the 1746-NI8 depends on its class. As a single-slot module it can be either Class 1 or 3. Class 1 configuration uses 8 words for input and 8 words for output; whereas, Class 3 configuration uses 16 words for input and 12 for output.
The 1746-NI8 is able to fit into any slot in either an SLC 500 fixed system expansion chassis or an SLC 500 modular system except the Processor (0) slot. The Self-Locking Tabs secure the module into the chassis slot. The SLC circuitry receives power from the 5V DC backplane supply with a 200mA current consumption, while the analog circuitry receives power from the 24V DC backplane with a 100mA current consumption. It requires no external supply. The 1746-NI8 operates effectively at temperatures ranging from 0-60 degrees Celsius (32-140 degrees Fahrenheit) with a relative humidity ranging from 5-95% noncondensing.

The 1746-NI8 input module is an analog input module from Allen-Bradley’s SLC 500 series. This analog input module has 8 input channels that it can use to connect to up to 8 different analog sensors that run on voltage or current power. The 1746-NI8 analog input module receives analog data from these sensors that is digitally converted and stored in its image table where all of the modular SLC 500 processors and all of the fixed SLC 500 processors in the whole SLC 500 system can access it. The 1746-NI8 input module is a single-slot module that supports both Class 1 configuration and Class 3 configuration. The Class 1 configuration uses 8 input words and 8 output words while Class 3 configuration uses 16 input words and 12 output words. Several SLC product lines use Class 3 configuration, but fixed SLC devices only support Class 1 configuration.
The Allen-Bradley SLC 500 1746-NI8 8-channel analog input module has diagnostics features that keep it safe and prevent it from becoming severely or permanently damaged. More than one 1746-NI8 input module can be used in a single system, as long as the power supply has enough power to run them all. The 1746-NI8 input module draws its power from the backplane of the SLC 500 system that it is part of, and this power level can be 5 Volts DC or 24 Volts DC. It can also be installed in any free slot in the chassis except for Slot 0 at the extreme left edge of the chassis, because Slot 0 is reserved for the system’s adapter modules or processor modules.
The Allen-Bradley 1746-NI8 module from the SLC 500 series has 8 channels. It operates with 5 Volts DC or 24 Volts DC voltage and it can operate in a Class 1 configuration or a Class 3 configuration.
